As someone who is coming in from the crazyness with the Towns dev money grubbing ways I'm on the hunt for a game that's right for me and was wondering if anyone had some advice! Now obviously Gnomoria is what you'll all support and I do admit it looks great, though I'm broke for a few weeks so I'll try and get it later:(, I wanted to know if there were other games out there that had a similar vibe or might have just seemed right to you!Sorry for asking such a broad question. New to this Subreddit. Honestly from a guy who has been on the hunt for a great city builder game, Gnomoria is by far the best.
Any other city building game is either a step backwards or in another direction away from this type of game.Anno 2070 or Tropico 4 or Sim City 4 are great city building games with more focus on macro-managing. You could go even further into empire building like in Civ 4/5 or the Total War series.Banished is like Gnomoria Lite but after playing it for 12 hours all it did was make me crave Dwarf Fortress (which led to me buying Gnomoria).Should add to check out Rymdkapsel as it's getting good reviews. There some big variance in genre here.We have Civ type. (civ, Europa, total war, etc.) Large scale.
Tech trees, century's. Focus on war, commerce, growth.
And city interaction.Tycoon type. (rollercoaster tycoon, railroad, etc.) micromanagement of something specific. Lots of very specific town building. And allows great creativity often.
In the same way DF/Gnome does.DF type. (DF, gnomoria, towns, etc) Micromanagment of a city.
Allows great creativity, due to ability to have total control of building.Sim city type. (sim city, ceaser, Banished, tropico) Macromanagment of a city. Buildings are all prefab. May or may not have limited terrain moding tools. There are probably actual names for these genres, specifically. More or less the game hit Steam through the greenlighting process and as soon as it touched down on Steam it's updates gradually slowed to a crawl. About a few weeks ago the Artist abandoned ship followed by the head dev magically coming back after 2 months to admit defeat.
An uproar began from the community and he decided to come back out of the blue and say 'NOPE, JUST KIDDING I'M HIRING SOMEONE SO DON'T BE MAD!' We all got really mad regardless.Towns died, we're calling him a fraud, etc etc etc. You can go see the state of problems over at and I've lead most of the charge from the aggressors side.
